UNIT 5: Understanding and Interpreting a Brief

Throughout this assignment I will be writing about what is Working to a brief and the different requirements that are need when working to different types of briefs.

Working to a brief

Working to a brief is used in any Creative Media Organisation or job where a brief is given by the client as to what to do to achieve the best possible outcome by the end of the deadline that is given by the client on the brief, this might be verbally given or some written up formally by a company that want the job done at a specific time with all the requirements written on the brief. There are 8 different types of briefs that you need to know what kind of brief you are dealing with. The Most important things you need to consider when looking at a brief is looking at the final date and whether  you are able to achieve the best possible outcome by that date, The time-scale is important as well as you need to know if the task given in the brief is too difficult and you would need extra time to complete it, also, you need to look at the skills and weaknesses and whether you have the desirable skills needed to complete the task or you might need an extra pair of hands that has a bit more knowledge of things in a certain area that you aren't. All of theses things can be negotiated by the client.

When negotiating a brief you need to carefully read through all the details and know what exactly you need to negotiate about. But also, you need to check anything and everything to make sure you are 100% clear about everything. You can only negotiate contents that you feel are too much for you to handle. 

Types of Briefs:

There are 8 different types of brief that have different requirements and different styles.

The first brief is called Contractual brief, which is a descriptive brief that you have to sign formally. This type of brief is written formally with formal language and paragraphs and is presented in a very professional way. Once the brief is signed, the client can take legal actions if something isn't met. An example of this type of brief is 'Phone Contract' where you sign a formal paper to confirm that you have brought the phone and are willing to pay the amount of money stated each month. These briefs cannot be negotiated.

The second brief is called a Negotiated brief, where the brief can be altered and can change the deadline date and anything that you don't feel comfortable with doing. This type of contract is meant to be negotiated as the client may have an idea in their head but doesn't know exactly what they want the finished product/piece to be so they leave it to the employee to deal with the creativity of the work which gives the employee more creative freedom. For example this type of brief can be used in a creative media such as Graphic design as the client gives the employee the idea that they want to achieve and then it is up to the graphic designer to come up with the design and everything.

The third type of brief is a Formal brief that outlines the specs of a product or service. This type of brief is well set out and structured with formal language and thoroughly explained all the way through. The brief is set out in a neat and orderly manner and may have the company's logo on there. An example of this type of brief is a form in which you apply for a job as it sets out the requirements and specs in a formal and neat manner.

The fourth type of brief is a Informal Brief, which can be a short text or email explaining what the person wants you to do. This type of brief does necessarily have to be written and can be verbally communicated and if often seen when dealing with friends or family members or when little money is involved in the brief.

The fifth type of brief is called a Commission brief which is where a client commissions a company to fullfill a brief. This type of brief is only given to companies that the client has established relations with

The sixth type of brief is called a Co-operative brief which is where a client and the employee sit down and cover what the client wants to be done in a informal way of communication. By using verbal communication within for the brief this gives the employee a chance to negotiate any necessary needs or time dates that they believe that can be achieved. This type of brief can be used in Web design as the client will sit down with the employee and the client will give the employee a clear understanding of what the person wants and will negotiate a timescale as to when it can be done by.

The Seventh type of brief can be called a Tender brief, this type of brief is put out publicly and different production companies will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the client and the one with best pitch will get the job in the end. This is a good opportunity for the company as they will have several different ideas pitched to them and will make it easier for the companies business to see the ideas of different companies perspectives. An example of this is when a Job advertisement will happen as there will be different people coming from different places sharing their knowledge and creating and pitching their ideas to the company.

The eight and final type of brief is a Competition brief, which is where a competition is put out into the public where people will be able to design and create what the brief wants and the winner of the competition will get a reward of some kind. An example of a competition brief is the Sundance short film festival where several individuals go out and create a short film to the brief given to you from the client. The information that would be given is a Timescale, Specifications and how the judging will happen within this competition.
